Born one day apart, Northwest hip hop duo KnowMads began their movement almost a decade ago and have been cultivating one of the most diehard independent followings in the region ever since. They began making music purely out of love. As their passion grew, so did their fan base.
Tom Pepe and Tom Wilson went to rival high schools in Seattle where their infamous rap battles during football games were often more of a spectacle than the game itself. Wilson had a makeshift studio in his attic where they produced their first songs; their recording booth was made out of two old mattresses. For years they casually competed with each other, ultimately finding their cadence together, somewhere between Atmosphere and Outkast.
They released their first album, self-titled KnowMads, as juniors in high school and followed up with their 2009 LP, SEATTLE, selling over 5000 copies and creating a global awareness that follows them to this day. Their third LP, The KnewBook (2012) landed at #7 on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts, solidifying their grassroots movement.
For the past three years KnowMads have been working exclusively with Los Angeles-based producer Peter Lee Johnson, who created some of the most infectious melodies behind Ty Dolla Sign, Big Sean and Post Malone. Johnson laid the sound for KnowMads latest album Knew School (2016) as the sole instrumentalist, reminiscent of Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.
Their significant online presence, including over 75,000 monthly Spotify listeners, has brought forth opportunities to open for Macklemore, Chance The Rapper and landed them slots at major music festivals such as Bumbershoot and Sasquatch! This past fall KnowMads headlined their first tour, performing in 15 cities on the West Coast from Vancouver B.C. to Los Angeles. In 2018, KnowMads are headed overseas to perform in Europe for the first time, touring 12 cities primarily in the UK, France and Germany.
KnowMads have a synergy that can only come with a decade’s worth of writing and performing together. Their sound encompasses two unique personalities and tones, but the message of their music has one voice. “Our fans often tell us they feel like we put their thoughts into words,“ Pepe says, “We were making music for ourselves, we didn’t realize that we were speaking for so many people who felt like us.”

Nick Brewer:
In the tradition of early-aughts U.K. artists Mike Skinner and Just Jack, East London-based Nick Brewer rapped over jazzed-out beats with speed and a tongue- swirling flow. Although he studied history at Essex University, he ended up dedicating his life to rap, a love sparked at age nine by his first rap CD, Puff Daddy’s „I’ll Be Missing You.“ He released a series of EPs within half-a-decade: his debut, 2010’s Alone with My Thoughts and its 2011 sequel, as well as 2013’s Flat 10. His fourth EP, 2014’s Four Miles Further, featured jazzy soul production by the Confect and a flurry of guests (George The Poet, Little Simz, JP Cooper, Naomi Scott). In 2015, in the build-up toward his official debut album Recreation, he released one more EP (“Warning Light”), which featured Stormzy, Ruby Maze, Barney Artist, Tink, and another spot from Naomi Scott. His single, „Talk to Me,“ featured Bibi Bourelly (who penned Rihanna’s „Bitch Better Have My Money“) and helped Brewer garner even more widespread attention, charting in the UK Top 20. 2017 saw Nick releasing songs as part of a new project; “Many Moods”, which will continue to be a journey into Nick’s life. In addition to this series, there will also be singles and visuals released, with the first being a song titled “Really” that will be available early 2018.
